CoreLogic and Office of the Chief Economist Continue to Offer Insight

Russell McIntyre    |    Housing Policy

Led by Executive and Chief Economist Dr. Frank Nothaft, the Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) at CoreLogic frequently delivers analysis, commentary and forecasting trends in global real estate, insurance and mortgage markets, through keynote speeches at sponsored events and moderated panels, as well as in blog posts and reports.

Since so many of us spend our summer months on vacation or otherwise out of the office, I thought it would be of value to offer readers a second opportunity to review the activities of the OCE, providing links below to highlights and firsts from the OCE during the third quarter of this year.

Frank Examines the Health of the Housing and Mortgage Markets
Frank recently sat down with Rachel Williams, editor-in-chief of DS News Magazine, to discuss some of the most important indicators that economists should watch in order to accurately gauge the health of today’s housing market. Their conversation also included comparisons of market growth between 2017 and 2016, and Frank’s projections for home mortgage credit and home equity line of credit (HELOC) lending over the coming months.

Molly Recognized as One of HousingWire’s ‘Women of Influence’
CoreLogic Principal Economist Molly Boesel has been named to Housing Wire’s 2017 Women of Influence, which recognizes female leadership in the mortgage finance industry.  The publication highlighted many of her accomplishments over the past year, including the development of the CoreLogic Loan Performance Insight Report.

Sam Analyzes the FHFA’s Duty to Serve Program
In December 2016, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) released its Duty to Serve Underserved Markets rule, which addresses improvements to home financing for very low- to moderate-income families across three underserved markets: manufactured housing, affordable housing preservation, and rural housing. At our most recent Sunset Seminar, CoreLogic Deputy Chief Economist Sam Khater kicked off the discussion by looking at the challenges, opportunities, and expectations of these Duty to Serve plans.

Frank Discusses the Implications of Hurricane Harvey on the Housing Market
In a recent video on the CoreLogic Insights Blog, Frank provides an economist’s perspective on the implications of natural disasters on the housing market.  He addresses topics including limited inventory, damage estimates, insurance considerations, and a timeline for reconstruction.

Molly Speaks to Servicing Lab at the Five Star Conference
The annual Five Star Conference assembles leaders from across the nation and across the housing service industry for enlightening keynotes, educational academic labs, and leadership development forums.  At this year’s conference, Molly addressed the Servicing Lab on a variety of industry topics, including the outlook for home equity and non-QM lending.

Frank and Sam Serve on NABE Committees
As a member of the Economic Policy Survey Committee of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE), Frank works with other NABE members to tailor survey questions that cover current economic issues facing business economists and policy makers, and assists in the interpretation of the results.  In addition, Sam serves on the NABE’s Tech Economics Conference committee and will speak at the Seattle event in November.

Molly Predicts 2016 HMDA Origination Numbers
By analyzing CoreLogic public records data, Molly forecasted that the 2016 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) data would show a year-over-year increase in mortgage originations of roughly 10 percent to just shy of eight million mortgages (including both home purchase and refinance originations).  Sure enough, when the HMDA data was released, it identified roughly 7.8 million mortgage originations in the 2016 calendar year.

Upcoming Event: Frank and Sam to Provide Insight at Annual CoreLogic Symposium
For the fifth straight year, CoreLogic is partnering with the Urban Institute to host our annual housing symposium in Washington, D.C. This year’s symposium, “Housing Finance, Affordability, and Supply in the Digital Age”, will feature several keynote speakers, including an update on the housing and mortgage markets from Frank.  Additionally, Sam will participate on a panel that addresses the supply-side challenges of cost, affordability, and regulation.
