Five simple rules to find the property management software that's right for you
By Mark Jennings, Vice President, CoreLogic®
The benefits of property management software are well-documented, but how do you know which software to choose? Whether you are re-examining your current software or just looking for the first time, here are five simple rules to help you make an informed decision:
Keep It Simple
Software needs to simplify your daily operations while minimizing costs. If it is difficult to use, requires work-arounds or isunable to easily complete the functions your business needs, run—don’t walk—away. Instead, look for integrated qualities like versatile accounting features, streamlined processes designed to replace manual, time-consuming labor, banking integration and the ability to unite community websites.
Listen to Your Instincts
We’ve all had love/hate relationships with various components of technology over the years. There’s nothing more frustrating than spending more time trying to do something on a computer than it would have taken to complete manually. This is why your property management software needs to be intuitive, user-friendly and turnkey.
Actions Speak Louder than Words
Once you commit to a property management software solution, will your software provider walk the talk—even long after the deal is done? A customer service team should be readily available to assist with any questions, as well as provide database and application software support.
Know When to Say “Game Over”
When property management software requires more time than it is actually saving, it is time to say good-bye. Is the product able to grow and adapt to your business needs? Is the company a long-term business partner, or a fly-by-night tech company with little experience in community association management? Don’t be afraid to say “it’s you, not me” when the answers aren’t what you are looking for.
Let Your Business Shine
The software you choose needs to work for you—not against you. It can make operational, administration and management functions faster, easier and more productive—all while letting your business shine. Determine what business functions are most critical to you, and select the software that delivers in those areas.
Doing research when deciding to obtain or update your property management software can go a long way to helping you choose the right solution. Some key items you may look at when examining software are:
- Database and application software support
- Customizable software
- Customizable reporting features
- Integration with third-party vendors
- Improved customer service for your clients
