The CoreLogic HPI started 2018 strong with an increase in National home prices of 6.6 percent from a year ago. Low inventory of entry-level homes has led to rapid price appreciation of lower-priced homes compared with higher-priced homes. The low-price tier appreciated 9 percent in January, compared with appreciation of 5.3 percent for the high-price tier. Appreciation in the low-price tier began pulling ahead of the other price tiers in 2013, and has remained steady. The five-year appreciation rate for the low-price tier was 53 percent in January, compared with 30 percent for the high-price tier.
