The CoreLogic Home Price Index for June 2019 showed that U.S. home prices increased 3.4% from a year ago, sharply lower than the June 2018 increase of 6.1%. In the first half of 2019 – January through June – home prices increased 2.9%, which was the slowest first half of any year since 2011, when prices increased by 0.8%. While the year-ago comparison in home price appreciation shows a slowdown, the month-ago comparison tells a different story. The June 2019 annual home price increase was unchanged from the prior month, ending a trend that started in May 2018 of lower annual appreciation from one month to the next.
