The CoreLogic Home Price Index for October 2020 shows U.S. home prices increased 7.3% year over year, more than double the appreciation from a year ago. The gain in October 2020 was the fastest gain in home prices since April 2014. Digging further into the numbers, we can see a shift in buyer interest toward detached rather than attached homes. This shift in preference comes from the need for more living space and a desire to be located in less densely populated neighborhoods. Prices of single-family detached homes posted an annual increase of 7.9% in October, compared with a 4.5% annual price increase in attached homes.
