The CoreLogic Home Price Index for June 2020 shows U.S. home prices increased 4.9% year over year, an acceleration in growth from the prior month and prior year. Home prices were pushed up as strong demand of for-sale homes was met by low supply. Home prices have continued to increase since the beginning of the recession that started in March, which is atypical – home prices fell in four of the five recessions from 1980 to 2008. The HPI is predicted to increase through the end of 2020, but then weaken in 2021 with prices falling 1% by June 2021.
