Full-Time Employees Share Their
Experiences as Interns

At CoreLogic, we believe that internships are the key to helping students gain valuable work experience and to learn about the CoreLogic culture. Our internship program provides students with the opportunity to experience the day-to-day work environment, facing challenges and making decisions that have an impact.

Many of our interns convert into full-time hires following their internships. We caught up with two of them to find out how they are doing now and hear why they chose to stay on at CoreLogic.

Q: What did you enjoy most about your internship experience?
A: I got hands-on experience working with a variety of technologies, none of which I had worked with in college. I am thankful to my mentor for giving me the freedom to explore the space and see what really interested me and encouraged breadth of knowledge over depth.

Q: What kinds of technology and cutting-edge tools do you work with?
A: Hadoop (Hive, Spark, Ambari, HDFS), AWS

Q: What made you decide to stay on full-time at CoreLogic?
A: The opportunity to grow my skillset in an environment that gave us the freedom to experiment and innovate. To this day, I get to work on and build systems that I wouldn’t be able to at a smaller-scale company. My value to my team is defined by my drive to excel, rather than by a set of assigned tasks.

Q: What do you love about your job?
A: As a dev ops engineer, I think of myself as a digital contractor, building a data factory. We build the shell of the building, then design, build and program the machines that allow the business to create value.

Q: What challenges are you solving in your role?
A: Because of the scale of our data operations, our challenges are beyond simply arriving at a solution that works. We need to make our solutions automatable, and therefore scalable, to reduce the load on our team and allow us to focus on more interesting problems.

Q: What piece of advice would you give to the new interns starting in June?
A: I would give new interns the same advice that my mentor gave me: Don’t focus on mastering any one thing. You will be more valuable if you can contribute to solving more problems through general knowledge instead of a single subject of expertise.

Q: What did you enjoy most about your internship experience?
A: Working in a team-based internship project was helpful in seeing how to accomplish work at a business level. My favorite part was working with my team to collectively finish the project over the summer. It was nice to work with interns from different departments to keep the project moving on schedule.

Q: What kinds of technology and cutting-edge tools do you work with?
A: I work with big data tools such as Apache Hive and Spark, AWS, and Google Cloud Platform.

Q: What made you decide to stay on full-time at CoreLogic?
A: Working at CoreLogic is a great learning experience because the company is still growing in the data science department. I believe my work goes further and I have more inputs, as an entry-level employee, on large projects.

Q: What do you love about your job?
A: I love the people that I work with, as well as the tools that we use. We do a lot of research on best tools to use, and learning new technologies is heavily encouraged.

Q: What challenges are you solving in your role?
A: Since we don’t always manufacture our own data, we deal with a lot of challenges regarding data quality, and the challenging part is cleaning and getting the data ready to fit into our models.

Q: What piece of advice would you give to the new interns starting in June?
A: Ask questions and utilize the people on your team as much as possible. There are so many learning opportunities at CoreLogic, so try to take advantage of as many as you can.
